Two of the three Victory Conditions (Expansion and Magic) require having at least three cities, so expanding is borderline essential in this game.

In this guide, I will explain how to found Outposts and Cities in Age of Wonders 4 to help you grow your empire.

Outpost Founding Guide – How to Make Outposts in Age of Wonders 4

Outposts are the first form of expansion in Age of Wonders 4 and they have various uses.

To build an Outpost, move your Hero to the province where you want to set up and select ‘Build Outpost’. This will cost 25 Gold and will create an Outpost in the next turn.

As for their purpose, Outposts can be converted to other cities or used to gain nodes that are outside of your initial influence. They can also be used to block other Empires from expanding, set up forward bases, and as safe zones to heal your units.

Then, Outposts can be upgraded to Provinces, which will allow them to claim one additional tile. This is useful if there is another Node that you wish to claim nearby.

Lastly, Outposts can be used to found a city or build walls and a watch tower to create a small fort.

You can have as many Outposts as you want in Age of Wonders 4, as long as you can maintain their upkeep. Each Outpost will cost 10 Gold per turn to maintain.

City Founding Guide – How to Settle New Cities in Age of Wonders 4

With an Outpost established, you have the option to convert it into a city. To settle a new city in Age of Wonders 4, select an established Outpost and choose “Found a City”.

This will cost Imperium and the exact cost will vary based on the number of cities you currently have.

Keep in mind that Age of Wonders 4 has a city cap and you can’t make infinite cities as it will get extremely expensive in terms of Imperium.

The cost starts getting expensive from the fourth city, so unless you have unlocked certain bonuses from the Empire Unlock tree, I recommend staying at three cities.

After all, three cities are all you need to achieve a Magic or Expansion Victory.

Wrapping up

To summarize this City and Outpost founding guide in Age of Wonders 4, players can found Outposts by using their Hero and have them operate as forward bases or to secure nodes.

Then, Outposts can be upgraded to Cities to help grow your empire and achieve certain victory conditions.
